Smart Burn Contract #11 — Hoarder, 2022

In 2021, Jonas Lund launched his first NFT series, entitled Smart Burn Contracts: a series of contractual agreements concluded by the owner when purchasing the token. If the commitments recorded on the coin are not respected, the artist burns the NFT, thus destroying it and removing it from the owner’s portfolio. Whether they urge the purchaser not to use social networks for a year, give part of their profits to a non-profit organisation, or achieve carbon neutrality, numerous Smart Burn Contracts have forged a commitment that runs contrary to the communication and profit mechanisms of our economic system. Within this series, the principle of the Smart Burn Contract (Hoarder) is simple: the owner of the NFT cannot sell any works in their collection. If the integrity of the Musée National d’Art Moderne collection were to be undermined for commercial purposes, the first sale of one of its works would automatically be followed by the destruction of the work created by Jonas Lund, playing a symbolic role guaranteeing the inalienability of public collections.
