Two years after CryptoPunks, Larva Labs launched Autoglyphs, an “on-chain” generative art project with all of its data stored as NFTs. Each work in the series consists of a different abstract composition using simple symbols such as + – |, / \, # and O, and can be reproduced in various ways, even as a mural, like the Wall Drawings by Sol Lewitt. The small amount of information that an NFT can contain, here serving as a medium for the artwork’s protocol, invites Matt Hall and John Watkinson to reengage with the restrictions that governed digital art pioneers such as Ken Knowlton and Michael Noll, to which this project also pays tribute.
