81 Horizons is one of these projects, presenting a collection of 81 landscapes created entirely “on-chain”. Each artwork is a unique combination of two coloured rectangles selected by the artist to recall a landscape, and created from a code written within the smart contract for his NFT. Here, blockchain is serving as a true medium for the artwork, hosting all of its data. The particular challenge of creating “on-chain” works is the small quantity of information that blockchain can hold, prompting artists to create images and animations with as few resources as possible: for Rafaël Rozendaal, this technical constraint offers an opportunity to tackle a history of geometric abstraction that has heavily fuelled his work.
