Joy Ride TM, 1988
U-matic, NTSC, son, couleur
Joy Ride TM is a vast museum, a great fair in which our fears and beliefs, our most archaic memories and utopia circulate. This little cosmic theatre is made of DIY decors, in which electronic, digital and physical materials (cardboard, wood, and fragile figurines) are combined. It opens onto the universal, giving all of these little animated objects and all of these petty movements the feel of a historical and mythological media frenzy. Before somnambulist spectators enter this miniaturised world, the deadpan, urban and television voice of a hostess warns of the danger and risks of this immersion.
It is a spectacle of the universe, of energy, of the movement of planets in human form, and a collage of an active future past, the great wheel of time, eternity, and memory, retracing our steps back to the original black hole and the Big Bang. All of this is held at a distance by way of a pseudo-scientific discourse, and advertising imagery is emptied of its message. The ghost train of Joy Ride TM leads us into a world of artifices, an atomised world, a jumble of signs and acronyms, flashes and shocks...
