City Slivers, 1976
Betacam SP, PAL, couleur, silencieux
Through the framing of images, Gordon Matta-Clark visually explores the architecture of New York. Reflection in mirrors and masks create a kind of "split screen" effect that intensifies the verticality of this architecture. The rhythm and formal interplay make this a very visual film, in which the elements of the city become a motif. The notion of slivers or ribbons evoked in the title suggests the physical passage of the reel, but also the passage of cars, as each image presents a horizontal or vertical passage of movement. This work continues his research into architecture, space and urban environments by deconstructing these elements in order to bring a new form of perception to these common spaces.
